I've got to quit reading the newspaper

There were more details on the teacher's union proposed contract in the paper. Remember how they want a 7% raise next year AND the year after, well it gets even better.

They want an additional 3.5% increase for new teachers. Yes, brand new first year teachers will get 10.5% raises. Teachers already get free health insurance and 90% paid health insurance for their families (I nearly fell out of my chair when I first heard that one). Now they want $5000 in cash if they choose not to take the health insurance coverage. And somehow or another the administrator's health benefits is worth over $10,000 in cash.

But that's not all. No, no it gets better.

The teachers do not want to have to spend more than 4 and half hours a day with children. If they do, they want extra pay.

Yes, that's what the paper said. They can only handle 4 and a half hours with children each day before they need combat pay. WHAT??!! If they can't handle children for more than that why in the world are they teachers??? Personally, I'd never spend that much time on a daily basis with a room full of children, but guess what...that's why I became an accountant and not a teacher. What do you think my boss would say if I told her I couldn't spend more than 4 and a half hours a day with numbers without extra pay? I'll tell you, she'd laugh so hard she'd fall off her desk chair and bonk her head on computer. That's what.

So let's recap. The teachers was an outrageous amount of a pay increase. Far past the norm and way more than cost of living index. They already get free health insurance for themselves and pay a whopping 10% for their families. They want the cash equivalent if they opt not to get free health coverage. AND they don't want to spend more than 4 and a half hours a day DOING THEIR JOB!

I can't stand it.

We have similar stuff in the teacher contracts here. Drives me bugshit. (can I swear in your comment section?)

They also get a retirement package that leaves the rest of us bankrupt.

Our school districts are putting bond measures on the ballot this year, too. Evidently they don't have enough money to run the schools.

It's a pisser, ain't it?

That's crazy, especially the 4 1/2 hours a day part.

4 1/2 hours a day! That's ridiculous! We're in the wrong professions.

YUP, DODEA teachers already have the 4.5 hours a day written in their contracts. AND, they get COLA, subsidized pay for teaching in DODEA schools. All in all they end up with about 60 grand a year for a paycheck. AND the kicker is they don't pay for housing or electric. It is a sad sad turn the profession is taking!
